The Butcher Shoppe located on Main Street in Airdrie has been a thriving business for 23 years. Since May 2016, the store has acquired new owners, Collin Dykman and Jent Hoekstra.
The pair began their partnership in 2011 when they combined Dykman’s experience of the meat and livestock industry with Hoekstra’s trade degree in Meat Processing. They created the business called Family Meats 2011 LTD which is located in Ponoka, Alberta. Between the two locations in Ponoka, Dykman and Hoekstra coordinate the livestock processing, smoke house, sausage kitchen, cutting floor and retail space with over 26 employees. In the six years of operation they grew from processing 20 hogs and 5-10 beef to now 400 hogs and 40 beef on a weekly basis. At this time Family Meats 2011 LTD has the largest provincially inspected meat plant in Alberta. Their facility also provides inspected hog organs, including tracheas to post secondary institutions in Alberta as well as STARS for practicing medical procedures.
Their ties to The Butcher Shoppe originated in 2012, when Family Meats began providing the Airdrie business with high quality meat for the store’s smoked products, gluten free selection and catering. The pair strive to continue and improve the store’s legacy of high quality products that are farm fresh, locally sourced and gluten free to make it “Naturally the Best”.
During this short amount of time, the new owners have continued their long relationship with the Airdrie Public Library by supporting the Annual Canada Day BBQ since 2003. As well they have led The Butcher Shoppe to winning the City of Airdrie’s community voted “Best Beef Award,” two consecutive years after switching ownership; to add to the previous six years of claiming the title.
